Roger Ailes, who was forced to resign from his job last July due to sexual harassment allegations and a sexual harassment lawsuit by Gretchen Carlson, died at 77.
Roger Ailes is credited with helping to develop Fox News into a leading Republican news channel. Under his leadership Fox News established its authority among Republicans and became extremely profitable to Rupert Murdoch’s Twenty-First Century Fox Inc.
For his role as an asset to the company, the disgraced Ailes received a $40 million severance upon leaving. According to sources, Aisles’ affiliation with Fox News didn’t end with his resignation. He continued to serve as Rupert Murdoch’s informal adviser.
His professional accomplishments aside, Ailes will be remembered for creating exploitative work environment which fostered the likes of Bill O’Reilly. For years women working at Fox News were denied advancement opportunities, intimidated and sexually exploited. Gretchen Carlson and Megyn Kelly may be among the best known Ailes’ accusers, but certainly not the only ones.
Roger Ailes who was a great broadcaster and a very successful man will be remembered also as a member of the “good old boys club” who – like President Trump – believed that fame and power ENTITLE him to sexual favors. It’s ironic that the very accomplished and powerful man was brought down by women he perceived as powerless.
