Misdirected Bonus Repayment Demand

Mayor Garcetti on bonus repayment demands placed on California National Guard veterans

“The men and women who serve in the armed forces risk their lives on the battlefield, and carry the weight of our nation’s defense in virtually every area of their lives — physical health, family relationships, personal finances. They deserve gratitude and respect when they come home, not a bill. A number of California National Guard veterans in Los Angeles could be affected by the Defense Department’s decision to pursue repayment of enlistment bonuses marketed to people volunteering to serve at wartime. Veterans accepted those offers in good faith and served with honor. Some gave their lives. The repayment order should be rescinded, and Congress must act swiftly to resolve this matter. I have directed my Office of Veterans Affairs to help local veterans understand their rights and to advocate for those who have already sacrificed so much for our country.” — Mayor Eric Garcetti

Anything L.A. Magazine: Correct us if we are wrong, but isn’t the party who’s made a mistake (in this case the Defense Department) responsible for making amends? Isn’t it shameful to demand a repayment (from California National Guard veterans) of a bonus that was given as an INCENTIVE to serve at wartime?…
